It is quite possible to earn a living and work from home as a freelance copywriter. I can say this because from starting out 3 years ago to today I have built up a successful client list and write for these clients and new ones 5 or 6 days a week. What started out as basically a time filler has know turned into a successful work from home small business and if I can do it you can do it too....
To begin with it is important to set the goals of what you want to achieve. You may eventually surpass these goals as I did, but all the better not to set your sights too high when first starting out. Here are some tips to consider:
- have a rough idea of how much you wish to make out of copywriting in the first year of working from home as a freelance copywriter. Do you wish to work part time and earn pocket money or would you like to work full time and make a living from copywriting? If you do not set your sights too high, you will not be disheartened;
- when starting out as a freelance copywriter do not expect to command high fees for your work. You will have to build up to this as you progress and become established;
- you have to be patient, success is not going to come overnight. You may wish to join a couple of freelance websites and bid on projects when starting out. It will take some time and hard work to build up a reputation as a copywriter;
- decide which area you would like to specialise in, for example blog writing, articles, sales, e-books, promotional;
- build up a portfolio of at least 20 good quality articles so you can send these out as samples when requested by potential clients;
- when you work from home you have to be strict and set yourself an allotted time for working. For example you may wish to start out working 9am to 1pm or 4pm to 8pm. You can be as flexible as you like providing you put in the time and effort. When things begin picking up you are then able to choose to work longer hours if that is what you want to do.
